The Pehlivanian International Conducting Competition (PICC 2026) will take place from November 7–14, 2026, in Festival Hall Bled, Slovenia. Conceived by French–American conductor George Pehlivanian, the competition for orchestral and opera conducting is open worldwide to conductors aged 18 and above, with no upper age limit.

Launched as a philanthropic initiative from the Pehlivanian family, in honor of soprano Dame Arpiné Pehlivanian, the competition welcomes artists at different stages of their careers.

Submissions close on February 25, 2026. To apply, click here. From there, the competition follows a three-step structure with several live orchestra rounds.

The Global Pre-Selection will see live auditions in 15 cities worldwide, including London, Paris, Berlin, Vienna, Oslo, Ljubljana, Milan, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Seoul, Beijing, Shanghai, and Taipei. Each city includes a designated local jury alongside George Pehlivanian. Those who cannot travel for valid reasons can submit a video.

From these auditions, up to 144 conductors are invited to the Preliminary Round, held from November 7–9, 2026, and conducted with two pianos. This stage is adjudicated by a special jury of five international conductors: Hossein Pishkar, Rodolfo Barráez, Ibrahim Yazici, Christopher Chen, and George Pehlivanian. From this, 18 finalists are chosen.

The orchestral phase of the competition, from November 10–14, is heard by an international jury consisting of Bill Chandler, Cristina Rocca, Henry Fogel, Marlene Brüggen, Lawrence Foster, Maja Kojc, Umberto Fanni, Ruben Jais, Robert Gilder, Alessandro Ariosi, and George Pehlivanian.

The final week is built around repertoire-based rounds with two partner ensembles: the POA Festival Orchestra and the RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra. Finalists will progress through Stravinsky, Mozart, opera, concerto, and symphonic programs.

The event will culminate with a public Final Concert and Awards Ceremony on November 14, 2026.

The PICC is awarding a total of $75,000 in cash prizes to selected winners and finalists, including a $50,000 Grand Prize.

In addition to financial awards, selected conductors receive guest conducting engagements with partner orchestras, potential assistant conductor or guest invitations with partner opera houses, a recording project with the RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra through the Orchestra Prize, and personal mentorship from Maestro George Pehlivanian.

"What inspired me to start this competition is the belief that conductors deserve meaningful opportunities at every stage of their artistic development," George Pehlivanian told The Violin Channel. "Conducting doesn’t follow a single timeline, and it was important to me to create a competition that reflects that reality.”

The competition will also be held alongside a three-day Sustainable Career Development Conference, held from November 7–9, 2026, in Festival Hall Bled and livestreamed worldwide on the official PICC YouTube channel.

Around 30 invited speakers are expected, with names and session titles to be announced closer to the event. The conference will bring together professionals from several parts of the classical music industry: orchestras, festivals, artist agencies, conservatories, cultural networks, social media experts, and the tax and legal sectors. The event will combine keynote talks, focused discussions, and opportunities for reflection. To learn more, click here.

The Franz Liszt International Piano Competition will be held from September 12 to 20 in Pécs, Hungary. This edition, which was originally going to be held in Budapest, is open to pianists born after September 1, 1996.

Dating back to 1933, when the first Liszt Competition was held under the direction of Ernő Dohnányi and won by the legendary Annie Fischer, the event celebrates the enduring legacy of Franz Liszt.

The updated jury includes Olga Kern, János Balázs, Barry Douglas, Jan Jiracek von Arnim, and György Vashegyi.

The submission deadline is April 15, 2026. To apply, click here. The results will be announced on May 1, 2026.

The competition begins with an online preselection round, in which the jury will choose twelve competitors based on submitted video recordings.

Pianists must perform from memory and present one Liszt étude, selected from among the Études d’exécution transcendanteGrandes études de Paganini, or Zwei Konzertetüden – along with freely chosen original works or transcriptions.

The First Round (September 14–15, 2026) will feature twelve competitors performing a programme that also pays tribute to the 100th anniversary of composer György Kurtág through selected pieces from Játékok (Games). The Semi-Final (September 17, 2026) will challenge six pianists to perform Liszt’s grand transcriptions, paraphrases, and original masterworks such as the Hungarian RhapsodiesMephisto Waltz, or Années de pèlerinage.

Finally, three pianists will advance to the Grand Final (September 19, 2026), performing Liszt’s Sonata in B minor and one of his great concert works — either the Piano Concerto No. 1 in E-flat major, Piano Concerto No. 2 in A major, or Totentanz. The Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by György Vashegyi, will accompany the finalists in this culminating event.

All competition rounds will be streamed on The Violin Channel!

The Franz Liszt International Piano Competition offers a €35,000 First Prize, a €18,000 Second Prize, and a €9,000 Third Prize.

In addition, special prizes include concert engagements, professional recording opportunities, and performance invitations from leading cultural institutions.

"Each performance pays homage to Liszt’s genius — his boundless creativity, technical brilliance, and visionary spirit that continue to shape the world of piano music today."

Prizewinners have been announced at the 2026 Singapore International Violin Competition. Twenty-four-year-old Ukrainian violinist Georgii Moroz won First Prize, while Second and Third Prizes were awarded to Danish violinist Michael Germer and Chinese violinist Zou Meng, respectively.

Winners were announced after the competition's Grand Final, where all three finalists performed with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and Joshua Tan at the National University of Singapore.

In addition to the three top prizewinners, the following special prizes were awarded:

  • Fourth Prize: Karisa Chiu (USA)
  • Fifth Prize: SongHa Choi (South Korea)
  • Sixth Prize: Qingzhu Weng (China)
  • Best Performance of Bach: Zou Meng (China)

  • Chamber Music Prize Supported by Ms. Vivien Goh: Georgii Moroz (Ukraine)
  • Goh Soon Tioe Violin and Piano Recital Prize: Zou Meng (China)

Twenty-nine candidates competed in the 2026 edition of the competition, which offered $110,000 USD in cash prizes. The prizewinners will also receive concert engagements with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, Macao Orchestra, and Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, as well as three-year loans of fine violins from the Rin Collection.

"The overall level of excellence and artistry among candidates was higher this time round compared to previous editions," said jury member Paul Roczek, Professor Emeritus of violin at the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg. "The differences between competitors were minimal; each demonstrated exceptional skill and finesse in their performance. As a result, the competition came down to nuances in technique, considerations of musical interpretation across diverse cultures and traditions, and, ultimately, the players’ ability to engage the audience."

“What has been most moving in this year’s edition is seeing young artists who do more than play beautifully,” said Qian Zhou, the competition's Artistic Director and chair of the jury. “On stage, they shone not just as competitors, but as musicians with individuality, sensitivity, sincerity and true virtuosity – exactly the qualities SIVC seeks to nurture.”

Organized by the Guadagnini Foundation, the Stuttgart International Violin Competition is open to international violinists 28 years of age and younger. The 2027 competition's prize money totals 70,000 Euros. The first prize winner will benefit from several important performance engagements and the loan of a 1746 Giovanni Battista Guadagnini violin for the three subsequent years.

The 2027 jury will comprise Christoph Poppen (president), Nora Chastain, Harald Eggebrecht, Feng Ning, Ida Kavafian, Daniel Stabrawa, Friederike Starkloff, Ulf Wallin, and Tianwa Yang.

All applications are to be submitted by July 31, 2026, at this link.

"A competition like this thrives on its spirit, its concept, and its authenticity, which is conveyed to the participants and radiates a sense of uniqueness," Markus Klein, President of the Guadagnini Foundation, told The Violin Channel.

"Promoting the talent of young musicians is the idea that frames everything we do in Stuttgart. It begins with the application, continues with the appreciative competition atmosphere, and is reflected in social media campaigns after the competition, in which all participants are featured. We also support the first prize winner in their artistic development over the three years until the next competition, in particular through numerous concert engagements. In addition, the perfect connection and professional cooperation between the partners, whether it be the University of Music and Performing Arts or the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra, are strong pillars of this competition."

To apply, an application video may be recorded in three takes. The pieces themselves must contain no cuts, and the required repertoire includes:

1. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

One of the sonatas KV 454, KV 481 or KV 526

(1st and 2nd movements respectively)

2. Niccolò Paganini
Two caprices from: 24 Caprices for Solo Violin, Op. 1

After the application video, the competition will consist of three rounds. The first two rounds take place with a piano accompaniment, while the final will be accompanied partially by the Cuarteto Arriaga de Banco de España and partially by the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Michał Nesterowicz.

"We are very pleased that we received a large number of applications for the first two competitions and that the level of the candidates reflected our own ambition to be ranked among the most important international violin competitions," Klein continued. "Another contributing factor is that our jury is always made up of violin personalities of the highest international reputation, which, in addition to the exclusive prize money and the offer of a Guadagnini violin from 1746 on loan, is of inestimable value to the candidates, who have the opportunity to present themselves to these personalities and benefit from their expertise.  Our cooperation with VC, which above all enables us to livestream worldwide with an enormous reach, as well as other media partnerships, also contributed to the Stuttgart International Violin Competition establishing itself internationally from the very beginning and very soon becoming a member of the WFIM."

The winner of the second 2024 edition was violinist Anna Im. Below, she performs Eugène Ysaÿe's Caprice d’après l’Étude en forme de Valse, Op. 52 No. 6 de Saint-Saëns:
