Jargar Strings has recently released its new Eccentric violin string set. The new set provides a warm core with ultra-responsive reaction, a tone rich in color with an edgy character, a wide dynamic range, and exceptional modulation.

The set is designed to be ultra-responsive, allowing players to catch the string quickly and receive tone immediately. However, this crispness is laid over a warm core to avoid undue sharpness. The D and G strings are wound with silver.

The D, A, and G strings are available in medium tension.

 • The E string is available in two variations: E Forte in high tension and E Dolce in low tension. Both strings are made out of a carbon steel core wound with a tin material and provide a powerful, brilliant sound.
 • The A string is made out of a synthetic core wound with an aluminium alloy material and provides a brilliant sound with a fast response.
 • The D string is made out of a synthetic core wound with silver and provides a balanced sound that combines warmth with brilliance.
 • The G string is made out of a synthetic core wound with silver and provides a warm and edgy sound with excellent bow response

Founded in 1798 in Germany, Pirastro is the only string manufacturing company in the world to produce strings made of all three core materials: sheep gut, various synthetic fibers, and steel.

Pirastro has now released the new Perpetual Stark string set for double bass. Created with chrome steel wound on a uniquely designed and extremely flexible high-tensile steel rope core, this set enables the player with a full and warm sound, a comfortable left hand feel, and a highly articulate and dynamic response.

Available in orchestral tuning, the Perpetual Stark strings have a fuller and warmer sound in comparison with the Perpetual Mittel. With their especially high gauge, the new Perpetual Stark strings are the thickest strings in Pirastro’s steel string range but retain a string tension close to that of Pirastro’s Perpetual Mittel double bass strings.

With a thicker diameter supporting the strings’ response, the Perpetual Stark strings can be played at immense volume with great ease. This set is suited for both pizzicato and bowed playing in classical, jazz, and modern music in an orchestral or solo setting.

The Perpetual Stark double bass strings break in quickly with excellent stability and its powerful and focused low end gives way to a full, sophisticated upper register.

“As string makers, the first question we are usually asked when we introduce a new set of double bass strings is what style of playing are they most suitable for? With our new Perpetual bass set, we would like to encourage the players to decide for themselves,” Pirastro shared on its website. “With a little adjustment on the player’s end, the voice can be manipulated to suit a wide variety of styles. A powerful and focused low end gives way to a full, sophisticated upper register.

The post Josef Špaček and Dr. Thomas Zwieg on the New Larsen Il Cannone Silver Violin Strings appeared first on World's Leading Classical Music Platform.

]]>

The Violin Channel recently spoke with virtuoso violinist Josef Špaček and Dr. Thomas Zwieg, Vice President of Product Development at Larsen Strings, to gain insight into the new Larsen Il Cannone Silver violin string set.

Josef Špaček, can you tell us about your collaboration with Larsen Strings?

My nearly two-decade collaboration with Larsen Strings has been a deeply rewarding journey. It began when I met Laurits Larsen as a teenager, and he introduced me to his strings. Since then, Laurits has been an incredible mentor, supporter, and friend. From my first experience with the Tzigane set, I was captivated by their clarity, warmth, and responsiveness.

Working with Larsen feels like a true partnership in pursuit of musical excellence. Their team is dedicated to innovation, consistently seeking musicians’ input to refine their craft. I’ve had the privilege of testing various string sets, from early designs to the new Il Cannone Silver, each unlocking new dimensions of my 1732 “LeBrun; Bouthillard” Guarneri del Gesù’s voice.

Larsen strings consistently enhance my instrument’s nuances and character, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to test and collaborate with such a forward-thinking company.

What do you enjoy most about performing on the new Larsen Il Cannone Silver strings?

Performing on the Il Cannone Silver strings is a joy. Their remarkable projection and vibrant, silvery tone fill even the largest halls effortlessly.

The resonance across all four strings is beautifully balanced - rich, responsive, and refined. The E and A strings sing with exceptional clarity and power, perfect for soloistic passages. When playing chords, the strings blend seamlessly, producing a cascade of overtones that feels almost orchestral.

Their quick response under the bow allows nuanced control over dynamics and color, letting me express myself freely.

How do they differ from other strings you have performed on before?

The Il Cannone Silver strings stand out for their bold, silvery tone and exceptional overtone resonance. Compared to other Larsen sets I’ve used, like the Virtuoso or Tzigane, the Silver set offers unmatched clarity and brilliance, especially in the upper register. The two E string options - Silver E for power and Caprice E for sparkling brilliance - provide fantastic versatility, allowing violinists to choose their preferred sound. Notably, the E strings resist whistling, and the G string minimizes “wolf” notes high up.

Over the years, I’ve tried other brands but always returned to Larsen for their reliability, especially in humid summer conditions when sweaty hands can make shifting tricky. Larsen strings allow smooth movement across the fingerboard regardless of the weather. Another advantage is their quick settling time - new strings stabilize rapidly, making them performance-ready even on the day they’re put on. Plus, they leave no marks on my fingers, which is a small but appreciated detail.

How do you take care of your strings?

Maintaining my strings is essential for consistent sound and longevity. After each practice or performance, I wipe them down with a soft cloth to remove rosin dust and sweat, focusing on the bridge area where buildup is heaviest.

Occasionally, I use a damp cloth for the fingerboard or a touch of rubbing alcohol on a paper towel for stubborn residue, always ensuring my hands are clean before playing. I regularly inspect the strings for wear and replace them based on usage, which can vary significantly depending on the intensity of the repertoire and individual playing style.

Generally, the Il Cannone Silver strings have excellent longevity, retaining their brilliance and responsiveness over time, which ensures they perform at their peak for every concert.

Dr. Thomas Zwieg, can you tell us about the new Il Cannone Silver violin string set and its main characteristics?

The new Il Cannone Silver strings are our final add-on to the Il Cannone strings family. They are the link between the Gold set and the Il Cannone Soloist & Direct & Focused sets. As their main characteristic, they possess a silvery and pure sound.

How is it similar and how does it differ from other sets in the Il Cannone Family?

The Il Cannone Silver strings share the same dynamic response and playing characteristics as the other Il Cannone strings, yet distinguish themselves with the brightest upper register in the entire family.

As a player, you will perceive particularly silvery overtones across the strings, which are brilliant and bright but retain depth and colours. Their lower register is bolder than the Il Cannone Direct and Focused line, but less dark than the Il Cannone Soloist. This adds additional layers to choose from while playing.

The set includes two different E-strings, one with medium tension and one with higher soloist tension. The latter will add even more focus and projection to the set.

For which players, violins, and halls are the strings best suited for?

The strings are developed for the demanding, professional player. In terms of instrument compatibility, they are versatile and will suit most violins. They are especially effective on instruments that benefit from added brilliance and focus. However, on violins with an already pronounced brightness in the upper register, they may prove too intense. In such cases, a warmer set from the Il Cannone family may offer a more balanced match.

Ultimately, these strings are for musicians who seek a commanding presence on stage - whether in orchestral, chamber, or solo repertoire - without sacrificing nuance or subtlety

What are you most proud of in the development of those strings?

We’re especially proud that the testing musicians immediately felt that the name “Silver” truly captured the character of the sound. That confirmation, coming directly from the artists themselves, was both affirming and deeply rewarding.

At Larsen Strings, we work with some of the finest musicians across the world - our Larsen Artists - whose insight, artistry, and honesty are invaluable to the development of every new string. While we employ the most advanced production technology and source only the highest-quality materials available, the true voice of the string is ultimately shaped by the hands and ears of the musicians who bring it to life.

It’s an honour to collaborate so closely with such dedicated artists. Their feedback doesn’t just influence the design - it defines it. Each prototype undergoes extensive testing in real performance settings, allowing us to refine even the most subtle nuances. This partnership between craftsmanship and artistry is at the heart of what we do, and the Il Cannone Silver is a shining example of that collaboration.

Created for violinists seeking a brilliant sound with increased overtone resonance and projection, Larsen Strings’ new “Il Cannone Silver” string set focuses on clarity and power of the upper register in particular.

Notably, the set includes two E strings. One is the bold “Silver E,” which does well for assertive tonal presence, and the other is the focused “Caprice E,” which is ideal for violins that would benefit from added brilliance. Both E strings use carbon steel and feature a removable ball end.

Crafted in Denmark, using innovative technology and high-quality materials, the set was developed in close collaboration with artists across Europe and North America. Such partnerships ensures that the strings are tailored to meet the specific needs of musicians, enhancing the symbiosis between the player and their instrument.

Il Cannone Silver is endorsed by the Czech violinist and Larsen featured artist, Josef Špaček, who uses them on his 1732 “LeBruin; Bouthillard” Guarneri del Gesù violin.

“Il Cannone Silver are definitely Soloist material,” said Špaček. “This new set delivers what the name suggests: A silvery, clear tone.

“I was immediately struck by the brilliance and clarity of the Il Cannone Silver strings,” he added. “They offer incredible projection and a powerful, vibrant tone that fills even the largest halls with ease. The resonance across all four strings is beautifully balanced — rich and responsive, yet always refined. This set doesn’t just complement the instrument; it completes it. These strings have become an essential part of my sound.

“It fits well on my Guarneri,” Špaček continued. “The E and A strings offer great projection in big halls, and when you play chords, the resonance is immediate – the strings start supporting you right away. Overtones are fantastic.”

The set’s D and G strings are wound with high-grade 99.85% pure silver flat wire for durability, exceptional brightness, and purity of sound, while enhancing richness and color in the lower range.

Lastly, the A string is built on the same high-grade synthetic core as the D and G strings and is wound with precision aluminium flat wire.

Il Cannone Silver responds swiftly under the bow, offers high bow resistance, and a wide dynamic range while maintaining a flexible feel under the fingers.

Il Cannone Silver is a perfect choice for performance in larger halls and those seeking a more vibrant presence,” wrote Larsen Strings. “With responsive playability and a vibrant tonal palette, Il Cannone Silver is a shining and powerful extension of the Il Cannone family, engineered to enhance modern performance with elegance and precision.”

The post Janine Jansen & Adrian Müller on The New Pirastro Evah Pirazzi Neo Violin Strings appeared first on World's Leading Classical Music Platform.

The Violin Channel recently had the opportunity to learn more about the newest addition to the Pirastro Evah Pirazzi family, the Evah Pirazzi Neo violin string set.

In this interview, hear from Dutch violinist Janine Jansen and Pirastro's Technical Director, Adrian Müller, who collaborated on producing this new string set.

Janine, can you tell us about your collaboration with Pirastro? What did you enjoy most about helping to create the new Evah Pirazzi Neo violin string set?

I have played Pirastro strings for many years. After getting to know Adrian Mueller, the Technical Director at Pirastro, I was happy to be asked to help develop a new set of strings. After a period of testing different options and explaining to Adrian what I was looking for in terms of sound projection and durability, I feel very excited about the end result. It was a fun and rewarding search together with the team at Pirastro.

How do you take care of your strings?

I always make sure, after concerts and practice, to carefully clean my beautiful 1715 Stradivarius, as well as the strings, with a cloth.

Adrian, can you tell us about the new Evah Pirazzi Neo string set and its main characteristics?

Evah Pirazzi Neo strings open up new horizons for modern synthetic strings and their production. Their sound is focused, radiant, and powerful, and blends easily to create almost any tone color that a violinist can imagine. From a practical standpoint, they feel great under the fingers from the start, have even further improved tuning stability in comparison to other strings, and therefore are fully ready to play on the same day they’re installed.

How is it similar and how does it differ from other sets in the legendary Evah Pirazzi family?

As stated, Evah Pirazzi, Evah Pirazzi Gold, and now Evah Pirazzi Neo belong in a family; our newest set is neither a follower nor a subsidiary of the others. These sets are each versatile and capable of great expression, and work especially well when matched to the right instrument and musician. Evah Pirazzi Neo was designed to have the full power of our most soloistic strings and a wealth of color possibilities, but with tonal clarity and ease of response in the foreground of its development. Evah Pirazzi Gold strings emphasize the violin’s warmer and darker qualities. Our original Evah Pirazzi strings are rich in overtones, including a strong background of deep tone colors, which increases the projection of their sound. With the addition of Evah Pirazzi Neo, this string family has everything to offer to an instrument’s sound characteristics as well as to the player’s personal taste.

Why did you pick Janine Jansen to develop this string set?

The question is not why we picked Janine Jansen, but rather how the collaboration with her started. Keeping close contact with musicians is our key to developing great strings, and so I had already met with Janine several times in the past to listen to her fabulous playing and to enjoy an exchange of ideas. She had played for a while on Evah Pirazzi and then Evah Pirazzi Gold. After switching to a new violin, she had the feeling that there was just not a perfectly matching G-string for the instrument. We tested various combinations from our product lines, and after a while, decided to simply start working on a new string. This was so successful in bringing out her violin’s naturally beautiful sound that we just kept going and eventually ended up with an entirely new set. Janine’s feedback was incredibly valuable through every step of the development process. By adapting to change and welcoming her excellent ideas we adopted a new combination of materials and production processes that we had previously never attempted.

For which players and violins are the strings best suited for?

Evah Pirazzi Neo strings were created with high-level players, professionals, and soloists in mind, but are nonetheless an excellent choice for anyone looking to optimize the sound and expressive capability of their instrument. They are also wonderful for beginners, since they hold their tuning well and feel effortless to play.

What are you most proud of in the development of those strings?

We are, of course, most proud of our collaboration with Janine Jansen, who initially sparked the inspiration for the development of Evah Pirazzi Neo and then remained invested in the project until we had a final product.

On the technical side, we are proud of the achievements of our engineering team. At Pirastro, we build all of our own machines, which are exclusive to our own production. Because we do not rely on other companies in this way, we can bring any idea that we have to life relatively quickly. With the development of Evah Pirazzi Neo, we started with the idea of a special material combination mixed with a new winding technique, which we were able to immediately test, analyze, and compare with other strings.

Another point of pride is that our team was able to create this powerful, soloistic string without the need for a high string tension.

Founded in Germany in 1798, Pirastro GmbH has launched the new EVAH PIRAZZI® NEO violin string set designed with support from the award-winning violinist Janine Jansen

Their collaboration has helped to develop violin strings that offer greater power and volume in its low frequencies, brilliance and focus across the entire sound spectrum, and a simple and direct response.

Jansen’s input was pivotal to strings’ design — personal, intellectual, and artistic exchange from artists has long been important to the building of new strings for orchestral string instruments and has encouraged Pirastro to “explore new paths and discover new worlds of sounds.”

“Asking the musician what they are looking for always comes first when developing a new string set,” explained Pirastro Technical Director Adrian Müller. “The intensive collaboration with violinist Janine Jansen led us to implement a new manufacturing process.”

“Excellent malleable sound, big, powerful, centered, noble and luminous,” Jansen said of Evah Pirazzi Neo. “The strings stay in tune incredibly quickly, are very easy to work with from the start and feel extremely comfortable under the fingers … they are in perfect resonance with my violin and give an optimal balance between stability, flexibility, power, warmth, and core.”

Delivered in a new recyclable cardboard set packaging, the EVAH PIRAZZI® NEO violin string set is available in medium tension including E-string Goldsteel with a removable ball end in gauge 26.8; A-string Synthetic/Aluminum; D-string Synthetic/Silver; and G-string Synthetic/Silver.

To purchase the new set, click here

“Evah Pirazzi Neo is a synthetic core string engineered to have exceptional tuning stability and therefore is ready to play immediately after installation,” Müller added. “Its particular construction and carefully chosen materials generate a high carrying capacity and projection.

“This is notably supported by a unique E-string whose special gold coating provides depth and brilliance to the entire set. With extra support from technical measurements and analyses, we constructed the Evah Pirazzi Neo violin strings to have a distinctive overtone spectrum with strong fundamentals, resulting in an overall clear and powerful sound. Most importantly, we did not need to increase the tension of the individual strings to accomplish any of this.”

The new Il Cannone Direct & Focused violin set is a logical add-on to the Il Cannone family. Just as we've successfully introduced Warm & Broad and the Direct & Focused options for our renowned Il Cannone cello strings, we're now introducing a clear, brighter, and more direct sound to our Il Cannone violin line. Our goal is to provide musicians with new opportunities to enhance both the sound and playability of their instruments.

What are their main qualities?

The Il Cannone Direct & Focused strings offer a distinctly clear and pure voice, exhibiting an even more pronounced singing quality compared to the current Il Cannone strings. While maintaining a rich tone, they elevate brightness, directness, and focus. In comparison, the existing Il Cannone strings deliver warmer, darker tones. In terms of playability, the new Direct & Focused sets provide slightly more resistance to both bow and fingers.

What materials are they made from?

We've implemented a novel synthetic core for these strings. While the winding materials remain traditional — pure silver for G and D, and aluminium for the A — the E strings remain unchanged from that found in the existing Il Cannone set.

What is their role within the Larsen family of strings?

These strings represent our most direct and focused sound to date, marking a significant milestone. Over the two-year testing period, we discovered that many players particularly favored these strings, especially the Soloist version. They are undoubtedly our most versatile strings yet.

How long does it take to develop a new set such as this one?

Development began as early as 2018, running concurrently with our Il Cannone Gold strings.

For which players are they best suited?

The Il Cannone Direct & Focused strings are ideally suited for instruments with a warm to neutral sound profile. They thrive with a dynamic bowing technique rather than heavy bow weight and are thus better suited to the demanding professional and ambitious amateur.

What have you heard from musicians playing them so far?

A notable observation from musicians is that their issues with wolf notes, particularly at the high C position on the G string, have vanished.

Any advice on how to best take care of them?

To ensure the longevity of our strings' quality in both sound and playability, we recommend regular maintenance, including daily cleaning and periodic comprehensive cleaning with alcohol after extended use. For detailed and specific cleaning procedures, we refer to the instructions available on our homepage.

Berent Korfker, the inventor of the KorfkerRest Luna, gives a deeper understanding of the features and innovations of the brand-new shoulder rest.

Tell us about the new Pirastro KorfkerRest LUNA?

Our new KorfkerRest LUNA, like our already very successful Pirastro KorfkerRest Model 2, directly and indirectly, encourages a free and inspired playing sensation. Directly through its ergonomic shape, which supports the left arm’s upward energy, and indirectly through freeing up the sound of the instrument.

What are the main qualities and innovations of the shoulder rest?

The qualities which players will appreciate straight away are its ergonomic shape and how secure this rest attaches to the violin. Adjustments are made with an ingenious quick and easy to use click-system which also allows very low and high positions.

The Pirastro KorfkerRest Luna is made of a customised synthetic compound which offers an astonishing fidelity and freedom of sound and it has an ultra compact, foldable, and feather light form factor.

How does it differ from the KorfkerRest? What is it made out of?

The Pirastro KorfkerRest Model 2 is made of hand-varnished, bendable maple tone wood. Its intricate adjustment mechanism and the ability for the wood to be shaped to fit the individual by bending allow for endless personal adjustments.

The Pirastro KorfkerRest Luna is made of a custom, sound-optimised synthetic compound. It is super easy to set up and folds into an ultra compact shape. Thanks to its clever cross section there is no need for any tilt adjustment. However, the KorfkerRest Luna can not be bent.

The KorfkerRest Model 2 and the KorfkerRest Luna are feather light and weigh only 32 grams. Both allow the violin to express an astonishing dynamic range, accuracy in bow response and trueness of timbre. Now that the KorfkerRest Luna is globally available it is exciting to see how players are discovering the subtle tonal distinctions between the two rests and how they interact with different instruments.

Tell us about the process of developing the shoulder rest?

I can hardly express how exciting it is to design, develop and manufacture these products with Pirastro. At every step of the way, they support innovation and the search for the very best. Then at the end of the process, their meticulous Germany manufacturing ensures that customers receive the highest quality product.

For instance, the high-tech material of the Pirastro KorfkerRest Luna was developed from scratch and completely customised to give us the exact acoustical and mechanical properties we were after. We literally sound-tested dozens of material recipes over several years to arrive at this compound which offers amazing acoustical fidelity, meaning that your violin will sound just as the maker intended!

Pirastro also inspired me to completely rethink the adjustment system to make the rest super easy, quick and secure to set up while also ultra compact when folded. Simultaneously, the well-calculated angles of its legs give the KorfkerRest Luna unmatched stability, which is essential for feeling confident on stage.

At every step of the design process, I was able to not only benefit from many years of experience playing and teaching at the highest level, but also from valuable exchanges with practitioners who support musicians’ health and well-being.

Inspired by healthy and energised movement, we tweaked the already very popular shape of the Model 2 to provide a maximum of what we call “dynamic comfort”. The result is a shape players take to immediately and which encourages them to play with more freedom.

Is it adjustable to any instrument size?

Yes! It is easily adjustable in tiny steps of 2mm to any violin from 4/4 to 3/4.

For which musicians and instruments is it most suited?

We designed the Pirastro KorfkerRest Luna for anyone who wants to experience inspired freedom of playing and wishes their instrument sounded freer with a more accurate, reliable bow response. And anyone looking for a quick and easy to set up rest which stays on their violin, unconditionally!
