The Franco-Belgian cellist Camille Thomas released a new recording of the traditional Persian song "Chera Rafti" in solidarity with all the Iranians who have lost their lives in recent violent events.

The video also features two young artists: the Persian-Canadian countertenor Cameron Shahbazi and the French pianist Aurélien Froissart.

In the text of "Chera Rafti" (Why did you leave?), the song's narrator speaks of the pain of absence experienced when a loved one can no longer be present with us.

A graduate of Berlin’s Hanns Eisler Hochschule für Musik and the Franz Liszt Hochschule für Musik in Weimar, Camille Thomas has worked with mentors including Stephan Forck, Frans Helmerson, and Wolfgang-Emanuel Schmidt.

In 2017, Thomas signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon, on which her second album, “Voice of Hope,” featured Fazil Say’s Concerto for Cello and Orchestra Never Give Up — written especially for Thomas.

Thomas has worked with orchestras including the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Academia Santa Cecilia, Sinfonia Varsovia, Staatsorchester Hamburg, Lucerne Festival Strings, Orchestre National de Bordeaux, and Brussels Philharmonic, alongside conductors such as Paavo Järvi, Mikko Franck, Marc Soustrot, Darrell Ang, Kent Nagano, and Stéphane Denève.

"Just as doctors care for the body, music and art care for the soul, I hope this music can bring comfort, healing, and peace to those who need it," Thomas wrote on social media.

"May this Persian song resonate in the hearts of all those around the world who endure violence, oppression, and fear."

Violinist Arthur Grumiaux performed Éduoard Lalo's Symphonie Espagnole in D Minor, Op. 21, with the Kunstmaand Orkest and conductor Anton Kersjes. The performance was recorded live in February 1964.

Lalo's Symphonie Espagnole was composed in 1874 for Spanish violin virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate, and it received its first public performance in Paris the following year. The piece blends Lalo's characteristically French Romantic style with flavors of Spanish music and dance, which pay tribute to Sarasate's nationality.

While the violin plays a soloistic role throughout the piece, the work's title is a nod to its symphonic scale, in which nearly all sections of the orchestra play an indispensable role. Unusually, the work consists of five movements--a departure from the three-movement structure that was more standard of Romantic concerti.

View Grumiaux's full performance below:

Belgian-born violinist Arthur Grumiaux was a graduate of the Charleroi and Royal Conservatories in Brussels, where he studied with Fernand Quinet and Alfred Dubois, and he later pursued advanced studies in Paris with Georges Enescu. A winner of the Vieuxtemps Prize and the Prix de Virtuosité, Grumiaux maintained a partnership with Philips Records for over twenty years. In 1973, Grumiaux was knighted baron by King Baudouin of Belgium for his services to music.

Violinist Fedor Rudin performed Ludwig van Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 61, with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and conductor Kirill Karabits. The performance was recorded live in Poole, England, in October 2022.

When it was first publicly performed in 1806, Beethoven's Violin Concerto was received largely as an oddity. From its striking opening marked by a lone timpani to its vast symphonic scope, the work had little in common with much of the existing violin concerto repertoire at the time.

While the premiere made relatively little impression on the public, the concerto found its way into the pantheon of standard violin concerti thanks to mid-nineteenth-century virtuoso violinists including Joseph Joachim and Ferdinand David, and today, it remains popular thanks to its blend of classical structure and Romantic sensibility.

Hear Rudin's performance below:

Violinist and conductor Fedor Rudin was a prizewinner at the Premio Paganini and George Enescu Competitions, and he served as the concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna State Opera Orchestra from 2019 to 2021. He currently serves as the Artistic Director of the Rencontres Musicales de Chaon chamber music festival in France, and he is the co-founder of the Fratres Trio, which explores intersections between classical and jazz styles. An accomplished conductor as well as a violinist, Rudin serves as Professor of Orchestral Education at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna.

Violinist Vadim Repin performed Dmitri Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No. 1 in A Minor, Op.77/99, alongside the Mariinsky Orchestra and conductor Valery Gergiev.

Recorded live in 1992, the performance took place at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, and honored the legacy of violinist David Oistrakh. Oistrakh was a friend and collaborator of Shostakovich who was both the dedicatee and first performer of the latter's Violin Concerto.

The concerto, which Shostakovich composed with significant input from Oistrakh, was not performed publicly until seven years after its completion due to Shostakovich's denouncement by the Soviet state. Even with last-minute revisions by Shostakovich, the concerto's premiere in 1955 was a striking success, and Oistrakh quickly brought the work on a concert tour to the United States and England.

A top prizewinner in the Queen Elisabeth and Wieniawski Competitions, Siberian-born violinist Vadim Repin has performed as a soloist with the world's leading orchestras and recorded with labels including Warner Classics and Deutsche Grammophon. In 2010, he was the recipient of the Victoire d'Honneur and the title of Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres from the French government for his services to music, and he was also named Honorary Professor at both the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and the Shanghai Conservatory. Repin is the founder and Artistic Director of the Transsiberian Arts Festival.

Organist and harpsichordist Paolo Bordignon recently performed two newly rediscovered organ works by J.S. Bach as part of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center's Annual Baroque Festival at Alice Tully Hall in New York City.

The two pieces, Ciacona and Fuga in D minor for Organ, BWV 1178 and Ciacona in G minor for Organ, BWV 1179, were identified by Peter Wollny, the director of the Bach Archive Leipzig, and received their first performances in 320 years earlier in 2025. Both works have been added to the official catalog of Bach's compositions and are available from Breitkopf and Härtel.

These two rediscovered compositions were incorporated into the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center's Annual Baroque Festival, which also features music by Vivaldi, Telemann, Handel, and Corelli.

"We are very pleased that we were able to add to the original program two short organ works which, just last month, were confirmed to have been written by none other than Johann Sebastian Bach," wrote David Finckel and Wu Han, co-artistic directors of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.

A new live recording of Sarasate’s Zigeunerweisen has been released featuring VC Artist Diana Adamyan as a soloist alongside Alain Altinoglu and the Frankfurt Radio Symphony.

The concert was recorded at the 2025 Rheingau Music Festival at the Eberbach Monastery on June 21, 2025.

Sarasate drew inspiration for Zigeunerweisen during an 1877 visit to Budapest, published it for violin and piano in 1878, and later orchestrated it in 1881. Although the work was based on existing dances and songs, one major melody in the third section was composed in 1873 by Elemér Szentirmay. Sarasate acknowledged Szentirmay's section in an 1884 reprint, but in a 1904 recording, he omitted that section entirely, jumping straight to the finale.

Listen to the recording here:

Currently based in Switzerland, Diana won international acclaim when she earned first prize at both the 2018 Menuhin Competition and the Khachaturian International Competition.

She has since played solo with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Bruckner Orchestra Linz, Göttinger Symphonieorchester, Uppsala Chamber Orchestra, Niederbayerische Philharmonie, Staatsorchester Darmstadt, and more.

Diana has also presented recitals across the US, Tokyo, and France, and performed at the Aspen Festival, Seiji Ozawa Academy, and the Matsumoto International Music Festival.

A graduate of the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München and the NAC Summer Music School, her mentors included Petros Haykazyan, Ana Chumachenco, Pinchas Zukerman, and Leonidas Kavakos. In 2024, she signed with Askonas Holt for general management.

A new live recording of Mendelssohn's lesser-known Concerto for Violin and Strings has recently been released. It features VC Artist Julian Rhee as soloist and director, alongside the European Orchestra Academy, recorded in the Casals Forum at the Kronberg Academy in April of 2025.

Noted for his prodigious early output, Mendelssohn wrote the D-minor concerto when he was just thirteen years old for his friend and teacher Eduard Rietz — who was later to serve as concertmaster in Mendelssohn's famous revival of Bach's St Matthew Passion.

After Mendelssohn's death, the concerto drifted into obscurity until it was revived by Yehudi Menuhin, who was shown the manuscript in 1951 by the rare books dealer Albi Rosenthal. Menuhin produced and edited a modern publication of the work, which was published by Peters Edition, and gave the modern premiere in Carnegie Hall in 1952.

Korean-American violinist Julian Rhee was the winner of the 2024 Avery Fisher Career Grant and received widespread public acclaim following his prize-winning performances at the 2024 Queen Elisabeth International Violin Competition. He also won the Silver Medal at the 11th Quadrennial International Violin Competition of Indianapolis.

Rhee has been recognized with a number of accolades, including the Aspen Festival's Dorothy DeLay Fellowship, the Arkady Fomin Scholarship Fund, and the Manfred Grommek Prize from the Kronberg Academy. He was also a US Presidential Scholar, receiving his medal at the White House.

You can hear the recording in full below. Rhee also performs the first movement of Ysaÿe's Sonata no. 2, "Obsession," as an encore.

The series will be released on Sky in December. Watch the trailer below:

The series will star Emmy-nominated and BAFTA-winning actor Will Sharpe as Mozart, while BAFTA and Emmy-nominated British actor Paul Bettany will take the role of Salieri. Violinist Meng Zou performed Jean Sibelius' Violin Concerto in D Minor, Op. 47, with the Harbin Symphony Orchestra and conductor Jindong Cai. The performance was a part of the final round of the 2025 Schoenfeld International String Competition Violin Division. Zou was awarded First Prize at the competition and received a cash award of $30,000.

Sibelius' Violin Concerto is one of the most beloved staples of the soloistic violin repertoire, but despite the fame it has enjoyed among audiences and performances alike, Sibelius, who channeled his own dream of becoming a violin virtuoso into the composition, struggled with the piece's origins. After a last-minute change in performers resulted in a disappointing premiere, Sibelius revised the concerto extensively, making drastic alterations before a far more successful second premiere in 1905, which was performed by violinist Karel Halíř and conducted by Richard Strauss.

Hear Zou's performance of the concerto below:

Chinese violinist Meng Zou has been a top prizewinner in the Hong Kong International Violin Competition, the Khachaturian 120th Anniversary International Violin Competition, the Singapore National Piano and Violin Competition, and the Classic Violin Olympus International Competition Tokyo. He made his solo debut in 2014 with the SCOM Symphony Orchestra at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music. Zou is currently a student at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music. His teachers include Li Kaixiang and Qian Zhou.

The 88SQUARED Piano Duo, which consists of pianists Karen Hsiao Savage and Jeffrey Savage, performed pianist, composer, and arranger Sean Chen's arrangement of Eugène Ysäye's Violin Sonata No. 3 in D Minor, Op. 27 "Ballade."

"Karen and Jeff approached me in 2024 with a commission to create a virtuosic arrangement for their piano duo, 88Squared," writes Chen. "I had already been mulling over a solo piano arrangement of Ysaÿe, so I took the opportunity to flesh out those ideas and I'm pretty happy with what I came up with! Many thanks to Karen and Jeff for not only learning the work, but going through the entire recording process with me."

Chen also incorporated musical arrangements to piano transcriptions by Busoni, Godowsky, and Liszt, as well as allusions to music by composers such as Ludwig van Beethoven.

Originally composed in 1924, Belgian violinist and composer Eugene Ysäye's third sonata for solo violin has become one of his most recognizable works. Unlike the majority of Ysäye's five other solo violin sonatas, the third sonata consists of one fairly compact movement, which contains a slow recitative-like section that develops into a second section characterized by virtuosic bravura.

Hear 88SQUARED perform Chen's arrangement below:

The husband-and-wife duo 88SQUARED won top prizes at the Ellis Piano Duo Competition and the Concours Grieg International Competition, and they received the Abild Prize for American Music. They have performed at venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Chamber Music America Showcase. Frequent performers of music by living composers, the duo has collaborated with composers including Daniel Ott, Heather Schmidt, and Lowell Liebermann. Graduates of The Juilliard School, they currently serve on the faculty of the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Multi-faceted musician Sean Chen has performed with ensembles including the Fort Worth, Indianapolis, and San Diego Orchestras and the Chamber Orchestras of Philadelphia, Indianapolis, and South Bay, and he has served on the juries of competitions such as PianoArts, American Piano Awards, Cliburn Junior,  and the Cleveland International Piano Competition for Young Artists. His transcriptions, arrangements, and compositions have been met with acclaim, and he has been commissioned by the American Piano Awards. Chen graduated from The Juilliard School and the Yale School of Music, and he is on the faculty at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Violinist Eric Silberger performed the Andante from Bach's Sonata No. 2 in A Minor, BWV 1003, in a 13,000-year-old Alaskan glacial ice cave.

The performance follows Silberger's recording of Bach's D Minor Chaconne and Paganini's twenty-fourth caprice in the Icelandic volcano Thrihnukagigur. Silberger is inspired by the way natural acoustics transformed both his musical and technical approaches to music.

For this video, Silberger performed on a violin commissioned by luthier Tim Duerinck. The instrument was crafted from organic flax fiber that resists harsh environments more effectively than traditional wood instruments without compromising resonance and sound. During filming, temperatures in the ice cave dipped below freezing, making the use of a specially designed instrument essential.

"Listening to the sounds of the cave made in the last ice age while playing made me reflect on the scale of human history and the timeless nature of performance," Silberger reflected. "Playing Bach's centuries-old compositions on a newly crafted violin within ice that predates human civilization was incredible. Music is the great bridge, linking us across time and space."

“Sound exploration can cause us to play in ways we would never imagine in a practice room," continued Silberger. "Often when I play a concert, I feel inspired by how different it is from a rehearsal or in the practice room. Playing in acoustics from nature can help inspire and create performances very different from a typical concert venue. However, those performances then live on in the artist, and can inspire performances in different venues for a lifetime."

Hear Silberger's performance below:

Eric Silberger was a prize winner of the International Tchaikovsky Competition and the Michael Hill International Violin Competition, and he has performed with orchestras including the London Philharmonia, the Mariinsky Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. He is a co-founder of the Hawaii International Music Festival and the Carneros Classic Collective. A graduate of Columbia University and the Juilliard School, Silberger's mentors included Itzhak Perlman and Lorin Maazel.

Deutsche Welle's classical music department has recently released a live recording of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto, featuring soloist Julia Fischer with the Dresden Philharmonic and conductor Michael Sanderling. The concert took place in April 2017 in the Kulturpalast Dresden.

Born in Munich in 1983, Fischer learned both the violin and the piano in childhood. From the age of nine, she studied the violin with Ana Chumachenco, and later became her successor at the University of Munich. Fischer's solo career began in 1995 when she won the International Yehudi Menuhin Competition.

She has appeared solo with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, Orchestre National de France, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, and the Warsaw Philharmonic, among others.

In 2011, she founded the Julia Fischer Quartet alongside Alexander Sitkovetsky, Nils Mönkemeyer, and Benjamin Nyffenegger.

Fischer plays on two violins, one ancient and one modern: the first was made by Giovanni Battista Guadagnini in 1742, while the second was made by Philipp Augustin in 2018.
